So, you want the perfect proposal? You want you’re significant other to be completely blown away? A proposal everyone can’t stop talking about for years to come?
Well without tooting my horn too much my proposal won us a free wedding dress! Yes, Brittany’s wedding dress valued at $2,000 was completely free.
So, it wouldn’t be right if I did not pass along this valuable information on executing the perfect proposal. The best part is our friends over at Megabus are putting on a mega proposal competition this Valentine’s Day to help you pull off the proposal of your dreams.
1. Talk About It
Guys (and girls) the first thing you should do before you even consider planning your proposal is making sure you are completely in love with each other. Marriage is a one-time commitment and not something that should be taken lightly.
Many times, small talks about marriage, life, money, and kids will verify that your relationship is serious enough to consider proposing. Having open communication is a must before, during, and after marriage.
2. Ask For Her Family’s Blessing
This is an important one, trust me I totally missed this step (ops). It might be old fashion but asking her family for their blessing is a very savvy move. Showing you care enough to ask first will win you a bunch of brownie points.
Since Brittany and I had been dating for close to six years by the time I proposed I totally forgot to ask for her families blessing. This is the one regret I have in my proposal. Take the time to talk it over with her family.
3. The Ring
Believe it or not, the ring is quite important to most bride to be’s. If you are lucky your partner is frugal and not materialistic. Let’s be honest paying an enormous amount of money for a material item is pretty silly. With that being said the ring is never something to skimp on and it should be “perfect” for her.
Talk to her in advance about what type of ring she likes. You can also talk to her friends and family to find out what style she likes. Peek on to her Pinterest wedding boards and see what she has pinned. Here is also an incredible guide to ring buying.
Like I mentioned above Megabus is putting on an awesome competition for a mega proposal. If selected as a winner you will receive a 100% completely free engagement ring! You have nothing to lose so why not sign up and take your chance?
4. Involving Her Family
Being proposed to is something extremely special in a woman’s life. What better way to make it a “fairy tale story” than to include her family?
Depending on how you are planning your proposal try including her family. Many times family members are able to watch the magic unfold from a distance away. Being able to share the moment with family after a magical proposal is the icing on the cake.
5. The Location
You know what they say in real estate, “location, location, location”. Well for the perfect proposal it is just as important. Time to reminisce about your relationship and think about all the important places you have been.
Come up with a list of places that have meaning to your relationship. These could include your first date, first kiss, vacation spot, romantic place, dream proposal spot, etc. The location of a proposal makes all the difference in the world so think this one through thoroughly.
6. Perfect Timing
Is there such a thing as “perfect timing”? Well in God’s eyes there is. If you are struggling to know when the perfect timing is, pray about it.
Good timing is another key step you need in the process for the perfect proposal. I would recommend never rushing something this big. If you are second guessing yourself, pump the brakes, and give yourself some time to digest everything.
Once you have made sure of your decision start planning out the time. You can never go wrong with an evening proposal. A sunset will make the lighting majestic and romantic. There will never be “perfect timing” so just go for it with everything you have!
7. Grab A Photographer
This is a step many people forget, including me. Luckily my family was close by and got the hint to start recording my proposal. Since a proposal is such a monumental moment in your life you are going to want to document it.
There are many companies that offer “secret photographers” but they are expensive! Your best bet is to include her family and have a family member capture the proposal. Since social media is such a big part our lives having a picture or video to share with everyone is a must (especially for her).
8. Be In The Moment
Okay, so you have done everything right up until this point. The ring, location, planning, etc. is all paying off as it’s setting up to be the perfect proposal. Now the pressure is on for you to execute on gameday!
Looking back, I can honestly say I have never been more nervous in my life. I think it was mostly because I proposed on a zip line 100 feet in the air and I was scared of losing the ring haha. Now is not the time to screw up and hesitate or back out.
My biggest piece of advice is be yourself! Don’t read off a teleprompter. Let the nervousness, emotions, and love take over everything. Be in the moment 100% and show your partner just how important and meaningful they are in your life. Tell them how you want nothing more but to live the rest of your life with them by your side. Own it!
It’s weird but I still get goosebumps talking about proposing to Brittany. It’s a huge moment in your life you will never forget.
9. Make It Epic
Whatever you do you better make it epic and special, you get one chance! Take your proposal serious and make sure it’s extremely special for both of you.
