Have you ever been shopping online, go check out, and be asked for a coupon code, but you don’t have one?
I certainly have, and as I try to be as savvy as possible when it comes to buying anything, I will then switch on over to Google and spend some time trawling through the search results to find a coupon code that will work.
There’s something available to help you with that and much more. Introducing the Honey App!
What is the Honey coupon app extension?
The Honey App coupon finder is a free extension of your browser, and will search for the coupon codes for you when you are purchasing something, therefore saving you lots of time trying various codes trying to get them to work (is it just me that still tries their luck with expired ones?! FYI, that’s never worked).
You can also get cash back with their Honey Gold if you are making a purchase on a site whilst having the Honey Extension installed.
It’s safe, free, and legal. If you are the sort of people who enjoy saving money and putting the money that you save towards things you deem more important – such as saving for a deposit on a house – then this is something that you should try.
After all, every little bit helps up – and the best thing about this extension is that it does it all for you automatically.
How do I get the Honey app?
Simply click here where the extension is available for download and you can then install it. It is currently supported on all the major browsers like Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge, and Opera.
Once it’s installed, you can see that it is installed correctly because it will come up next to your search bar at the top of your browser – a small orange icon with the letter ‘h’ on it will appear.
If you follow this link, you can download Honey onto whichever browser you are using (e.g. Chrome on Mac, Chrome on Windows etc). Follow the instructions – but in general, you are just clicking on Add Extension (it’s different for the different browsers), and you’re good to go!
You’ll know if Honey is working because when you go on to whichever site you are planning on purchasing something on, the icon will remain orange, and if there are coupons available they will be shown in green. It’s actually super user-friendly and fun to watch the coupons come in.
If you are in a Safari browser, the icon will remain grey but if you’re on a site with coupons available, the amount will show up in red on the icon.
How does the Honey extension work?
The Honey Extension has a collection of coupons available for various websites (not every single one is eligible, but it will come up with the relevant icons as mentioned above if it works on that site).
When you are checking out online, the Honey extension will see if there are any coupons that you can use to get a discount on your purchase.
Once you have selected that you want to look for the coupons, Honey will run through all of them for you and select the best one – it only takes a few seconds and could save you quite a lot of money over time.
Here is a quick video walkthrough on our YouTube channel on exactly how the Honey App works in live time.
Can I use the Honey Extension on Amazon?
Honey does work on Amazon – but in a slightly different way to what you expect. Because Amazon rarely offers coupon codes, there are better functions of the browser extension that you can use in order to save money on your Amazon purchases.
Have you seen something that you really want to buy, but it’s just a bit too much out of your price range at the moment? Maybe when it drops down in price a little bit you’ll be happy to buy it then?
This is where Honey can come in really handy. When you are on Amazon, click on the item that you are interested in, and there should be an ‘h+’ icon next to it.
It will then pop up with a little screen that says to add your item to the Droplist. You will be able to select the duration of time you want to wait it out for e.g. 60 days, and also the price that you are looking for it to drop to. This will save you from having to go back to the website every day checking for a price drop!
Just to add as well, when the pop up comes up that you enter these details in, at the bottom of it you will see that it says “View price history” and “View your Droplist” – here you will be able to look at the various prices that the item you’re interested in that it has been listed at in the past, and you can also have a look at all of the items you’ve added to your Droplist.
Following on from the Droplist and what you can see when the pop up comes up, you are also able to check out an items price history – but this time on the post (you can do both ways, but if you aren’t interested in using the Droplist this will be the easiest way to do this part).
When you are looking at the item that you wish to buy on Amazon, it will have a box saying if there have been any price changes, which you can then click on and then click on “View Price History”.
This will then take you to a place which will have all of the various price changes on there, up to the last 120 days. This is great for seeing if you are actually getting a good deal on your purchase.
This is good for seeing what the various Amazon sellers are selling for – when you search for an item on Amazon, it will bring up the results in the order that they want them to appear (some will have priority over others) – but that doesn’t mean that it’s the best price for the customer.
When you are looking at the item, it will tell you if there is money to be saved, and if you click on that it will show you the exact same item with a cheaper seller. This will save you from having to search through a bunch of different listings, which can be very time-consuming.
It will compare the shipping prices as well, and when you click on the box that says “Save $xx”, it will bring up a pop-up box that has the fee comparison on, including shipping.
If the item that you are looking at already has the best price, instead of having the box that says about the money that you can save, it will have a box that says “Best Deal”, which means that it’s currently the best price out of all of the same listings, and that no price changes have been found in the last 30 days.
What are Honey Gold and Honey Gold Bonuses?
Honey Gold is available in the US, Canada, UK, and Australia. It’s a free Rewards programme that is cashback for your purchases, like how you can get cashback from the Ibotta app.
With Honey Gold, the cashback amounts vary, and are completely random, but will be between 1-5% and is on the item cost without any shipping or tax fees.
To see if the site that you are on is offering Honey Gold rewards, next to the site name at the top it will have an orange “G” icon.
In order to claim your reward, you will need to click the “Activate” button next to it. When you are checking out, click on “Apply Coupons” which will get your discount, and then the Gold reward will get applied automatically.
Make sure that you check the Exclusions list though, as some stores may offer Honey Gold, but not on all of the items on their site.
The Reward amount will show in your account (under Account Overview) under a pending status after a few days of your purchase.
Honey Gold Bonuses
Honey Gold Bonuses are bonuses that you receive for signing up (available in the US only). It will appear in your feed, with the stores that are available and the cashback amounts next to them e.g. $10 at Kate Spade).
You will have a certain amount of time to carry out this particular purchase in order to receive your bonus, such as 7 days.
You can also receive Honey Gold Bonuses if you continue using Honey, which will show up as an orange box next to your browser window for you to click on and see how much the cashback is.
How can I redeem Honey Gold?
Once you have reached 1000 reward points you will be able to redeem these for a $10 gift card, which can be used at:
- 1-800 Flowers
If you are outside of the US, you will need to speak to the Customer Experience Team at Honey, who will help you with your redemption process. They currently offer gift cards at the following:
- Sephora CA
- Mecca AU
Honey Travel compares prices across various travel sites such as Expedia, Booking.com, and a bunch of other travel sites to find you the best deals on hotels.
When you use the Honey browser extension, you will collect Honey Keys. You can see how many keys you have in your account overview, and these keys will give you access to exclusive hotel deals, which you will find under Honey Travel.
Go to the Honey Travel section, search for the location etc that you are after, and it will show you all of the discounts that are available. If you are outside of the US, please note that everything will be shown in US dollars still.
Does the Honey extension work in various countries?
Yes – it is currently available in the US, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and more. It’s predominantly aimed at US users, so some of the features are only available to those in the US, such as Yelp Groupon finders, Amazon price drop detection and Droplist price alerts.
If you are using Chrome, the correct currency will be shown on the coupons, however, if you are using any of the other browsers (Safari, Edge, Firefox, Opera) it will show the coupon currency with the $ still.
For users in the UK, it will show as the $ sign again, but the value will be correct – so if the coupon is showing as $10, it really means £10.
Is there a catch with the Honey Extension? Is it safe to use?
There is no catch – this isn’t a dodgy app, it’s a legitimate browser extension that has been set up with the intention of helping shoppers easily find coupon codes for their purchases.
As already mentioned, the company makes money from the retailers – not from you, and not from selling any of your data.
It’s definitely smart to be a bit wary about things on the internet and not just download everything that you think sounds good onto your computer, but if you take recommendations from people that you trust and who have used it themselves, like on this blog, then you should be fine.
I have used this myself – I went to buy some things online this morning and didn’t have a coupon code but didn’t think anything of it (totally mind blanked!) until I went to check out and a Honey pop up showed me that there were coupons available.
I clicked on it, it checked the Honey coupons against my purchase and I saved more than $10 off my single purchase, so I was very happy! I can personally confirm using the Honey App is going to save you a ton of money with your online shopping.
BONUS: Other money saving apps

Once you get home, take a picture of your receipt, and Ibotta will get to work saving you money. We have earned well over $100 using this app for only a couple of months.
Ebates: Start earning cashback on your everyday online purchases. It’s very similar to the Honey app but instead of finding coupons to help save you money it helps you find deals on cashback items so you can get a nice big fat check in the mail.
Paribus: Is the app that will help keep track if stores owe you are refund or not. Many stores now offer a price drop or price match guarantee. These are difficult to track on your own and this is where Paribus comes to save the day.
